VMFA Portrait Workshop

That’s Me! Portraits, aworkshop for kids ages 8-13 will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 10am- 4pm, at Appalachian Arts Center. Organized through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) Office of Statewide Partnerships and taught by instructor Fenella Belle, this workshop encourages students to ask: “Who am I ? What are the important ideas and symbols that express my wishes, dreams, and everyday life ?” From Ancient Egypt to modern times, man has used art to record his identity through portraits, self-portraits, and symbols. In this workshop, students use a mixed-media approach, including monoprint, chine colle, collage, and stamping, to construct a self-portrait that captures their identity and puts it on display. No drawing experience is necessary- just come ready to explore and create!

Enrollment is limited to 15 participants, registered on a 1st come, 1st served basis, with a registration deadline of May 8, 2012. Tuition for the workshop is $30.00, with some scholarships available. Please contact the Arts Center at 276-596-9188 or via email at appartsinfo@sw.edu for more information, to register for the workshop, or to inquire about scholarship opportunities.
