Woodcarving workshop


On Saturday, December 16th from 10am-5pm, multiple award winning wood carver Jeff Bailey will lead an intermediate - advanced wood carving workshop at Appalachian Arts Center. Mr. Bailey specializes in miniature and caricature wood carvings. The cost of the workshop is $45, and students will receive instruction on how to carve either a Santa ornament, or a free standing Santa (pictured below.) Basswood ornament blanks will be for sale the day of the class at 2 for $5, and/or a basswood rough out for the free standing Santa may be purchased for $15. Participants should bring their own tools to class, or they may be purchased at the workshop.  There is space for 10 students, and participants will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment must be received in advance of the start of class to hold the spot. Payments may be made by phone via credit card, or stop by the Arts Center during normal business hours: Tuesday- Friday: 12:00-6:00p.m; Saturday: 10:00a.m-6:00p.m Please call the Center at 276.596.9188 to register for the workshop, or for more information.   Appalachian Arts Center, a part of Southwest Virginia Community College, is located on Route 19 in the ‘Old Archie Helton Store’ - 2.5 miles south of Claypool Hill. The Center not only offers workshops for children and adults, but also hosts poetry readings, book signings and performances. Artwork, handcraft, books and cd’s made right here in these mountains are offered for sale to those seeking a shopping experience with soul, that helps support the local economy.
