Painting in the Style of Cave Dwellers, Roman Portrait Artists and French Impressionists

Appalachian Arts Center offers a new series of art classes for kids this Spring. Led by master watercolor artist and mural painter, Ellen Elmes, participants will engage in hands-on techniques utilized by artists over a long span of art history. These creative activities will include learning how paint was made from scratch and put on cave walls by Prehistoric painters; painting with wax and pigment to make people portraits in the Roman encaustic style; and using layered dots and brush strokes to make "impressionistic" landscapes. Children ages 5-12 are eligible for this class, and should wear old clothes or bring a smock or old shirt to cover their clothes while painting. All painting supplies will be provided. The classes will be held from 4:00-6:00PM on Thursdays: April 18, April 25, and May 2, 2013 at Appalachian Arts Center. Tuition for the 3 class series is $50.00, but scholarships are available.
