Appalachian Paisanos

Two new exhibits at Appalachian Arts Center are being held in conjunction with Southwest Virginia Community College’s Festival of the Arts, the 2012 theme of which is “Viva Italia!” A special juried exhibition entitled Bel Paese (which translates as beautiful country) features works of art created by the local community in response to Italian art, landscape or culture. The exhibition includes watercolor paintings, photographs, drawings, fiber art, poems, and mixed media works.

Also on display is Appalachian Paisanos: An Oral History of Italians in the Two Virginias. Gathered by Jameson Jones, this collection of stories and vintage photographs explores the Italian influence on Appalachian culture.

Both exhibits will run from April 18- June 16, 2012. A reception is scheduled for Saturday, April 21st from 1:00-3:00p.m. at Appalachian Arts Center. All are welcome.
